Last year I heard of MC from Gaithersburg MD. I was surprised because the only Hip hop star I know of in my area is Wale from Washington DC. Logic released Under Pressure in October 21,2014 on Def Jam. The flow and the production on Under Pressure were top notch. Logic was hip hop's latest star.
After Becoming a fan of his first album I was really looking forward to his second album. The theme of The Incredible True Story is a science fiction space adventure. In the early 80’s and 90’s some of the biggest Hip hop albums had funny crazy theme’s on the cover art of the album as well as skits in between the songs. Slick Rick in 1995 released “The Great Adventures Of Slick Rick” in the album Rick when through one crazy story after another it was funny and worked well. DeLaSoul in ‘98 first album was a game show theme “3 Feet high & Rising” where they had to answer questions in front of a live studio audience to win prizes. I loved these albums and still do because they were fun, funny and reflected the time. The themes and the music worked together to create a picture you could almost see like a film with listening to these albums.
Logic’s “The Incredible True Story” theme he is flying through space in a ship with his friends looking for a new planet for the human race to live after the fall of earth. Sounds like the TV show Battlestar Galactica. it sounds like Logic was watching this show while writing which isn’t a stretch, he stated the director Quentin Tarantino is one of his biggest influences and watches Kill Bill while writing. The problem is the spaceship adventure doesn’t not fit in with his music at all. The good news Logic has not lost a step in his flow “Fade Away” the first song Logic flow fast over a song slow beat. He raps about how he wont fade away and is just getting started and has a lot more to accomplish before he passes on. I like the idea of a MC who is ready to live in the midst of a generation with so many being ready to die.
The next song “Upgrade” is cool to bad the skit is about upgrading the spaceship computer it reminds me of A Tribe Called Quest Midnight Marauders tour guide, same concept. in Upgrade “way back in DC i Live on the way to the everlasting life will they rob you / yeah they might as i face my fears and hop on that flight ive upgraded” Logic raps on how his life is in a better place since he started rapping. On Under Pressure Logic went into a lot of his early life from a broken home in Gaithersburg MD. His with his father on drugs his brother selling drugs and he used music as an escape. I hoped to hear more of this on The Incredible True Story but that’s not the case.
On “Like Woah” a smooth club song Logic even sings a bit on the background. Logic is one of the best new MC’s out today. Skills over substance saves this album. The silly space art and concept aside, The Incredible True Story is a good album. It is worth checking out.
If you have never heard any of Logic music get his first album “Under Pressure” then “The Incredible True Story. songs to download: Fade Away....Like Woah....Lord Willing
